Magic Fire Music : Salut James, heureux de faire une seconde interview avec toi pour Magic Fire Music. Notre première interview date de Décembre 2008 ! Déjà ! Parle nous un peu de ce qui s'est passé pour toi et le groupe entre aujourd'hui et notre précédent entretien.
James : Merci Cédric, j'en suis très heureux également ! Il s'est passé beaucoup de choses depuis la sortie de "The Fruit Fallen". La chose la plus importante qu'il nous est arrivée c'est qu'Edensong est devenu un vrai groupe live. Après de nombreuses années à lutter pour maintenir un line-up à peu près constant, j'ai fini par trouver les musiciens qui conviennent pour Edensong. La plupart de nos efforts de ces quelques dernières années ont été de nous concentrer sur notre set live et de nous habituer à travailler ensemble. Le fait qu'on nous ait demandé de participé au festival des Three Rivers Progressive Rock (3RP) a permis de faire bouger les choses. A partir du moment où Edensong a été booké pour jouer à ce festival, j'avais très exactement un an pour rassembler des musiciens et pour monter notre set (ça faisait quelques années que le set était déjà joué en live mais avec un line-up complètement différent !). On a un peu galéré à trouver les bons musiciens, mais chaque changement de line-up nous a rendu plus fort et a amélioré la cohésion de groupe. Aujourd'hui, le groupe est dans les starting-blocks : on a un planning de concerts assez complet pour l'automne, on travaille ensemble à la composition et l'enregistrement d'un nouvel album et on travaille tous très dur à promouvoir le groupe auprès de nouveaux auditeurs. C'est beaucoup de travail, mais on aime tous ça !


Magic Fire Music : Aujourd'hui cette interview va plutôt être axée sur Echoes of Edensong. Pourquoi avoir sorti ce disque composé d'inédits, de réenregistrements et de titres live ?
James : Au festival 3RP il y a eu les retrouvailles avec mes anciens collègues d'Echoes of Eden, groupe qui remonte à notre période lycée. Ils se sont joints à Edensong sur scène pour notre final sur "Beneath the Tide". C'est une chanson qu'on avait écrit ensemble quand on avait 14 ans et on a toujours rêvé de pouvoir un jour la jouer devant un vrai public ! 3RP était une opportunité pour nous de le faire. Après la performance, on a discuté de la possibilité de réenregistrer certaines de nos chansons de notre album "Beneath the Tide" avec Edensong sous forme d'un EP. Malheureusement (ou heureusement, ça dépend du point de vue), "Beneath the Tide" est la seule chanson de nos débuts qui a réussi à convaincre le groupe de la réenregistrer. Malgré qu'on n'ait pas enregistré un vrai EP avec les chansons d'Echoes of Eden, comme je l'avais d'abord prévu, la discussion a quand même initié le projet de l'EP "Echoes of Edensong". La décision de sortir un EP à ce moment là était purement commerciale : on savait que produire un album nous prendrait beaucoup plus de temps, une paire d'années peut-être, et on voulait quand même laisser notre trace pour que les fans ne nous oublient pas (surtout que le groupe devenait de plus en plus présent sur la scène) et pour leur donner quelque chose à écouter en attendant. Il y a une histoire derrière chaque chanson de cet album, je vais en parler un peu plus tard...


Magic Fire Music : Pourquoi avoir décidé de réenregistrer "To See But Not Believe" en particulier ? Tu n'étais pas satisfait du résultat ?
James : Hé bien en fait, techniquement parlant, on a jamais réenregistré "To See But Not Believe". On l'a seulement remasterisé. L'enregistrement initial est donc le même, mais je pense que ça sonne mieux dans ce contexte. "To See But Not Believe" n'est jamais vraiment officiellement sortie. Elle se trouvait sur un CD de nos débuts intitulé "Excerpts from the Fruit Fallen" qui était purement promotionnel et qu'on n'a pas vendu. Tu es un habitué d'Edensong, tu as surement dû entendre cette chanson sur le CD promotionnel à l'époque, mais la plupart des fans ont commencé à écouter après la sortie de "The Fruit Fallen". "To See But Not Believe" était aussi présente en tant chanson bonus cachée sur les premières versions de "The Fruit Fallen", donc on a pensé que ça vaudrait le coup qu'on la mette sur "The Echoes of Edensong".


Magic Fire Music : "Beneath The Tide" est une nouvelle composition, de quoi parle-t-elle ?
James : "Beneath the Tide" est en fait une des premières chansons que j'ai écrites. Je l'avais écrite avec l'aide de mes meilleurs amis d'enfance (qui jouaient aussi avec moi dans le groupe) Tony Waldman, qui a rejoint Edensong en 2009, et Ben Wigler qui a beaucoup travaillé avec le groupe pendant des années. On avait 14 ans, on essayait d'imiter nos idoles du prog : Rush, Dream Theater, Jethro Tull etc. "Beneath the Tide" raconte l'histoire d'un mec qui en a marre de sa vie qui ne le satisfait pas. Il passe ses journées à contempler sa propre vie et à regarder le monde de l'autre côté du rivage. Il aimerait faire partie de ce monde et pense qu'il trouverait le bonheur là bas, alors il décide de traverser l'eau pour y aller. Dans l'histoire il se noie (bien sûr !) mais finit par renaître de l'autre côté, c'est ce qui est révélé à la fin de la chanson. C'est une histoire plutôt grandiose, mais ça sort bien de l'esprit d'un gosse de 14 ans obsédé par la musique prog. Il se trouve que je pensais que les paroles là colleraient parfaitement à la chanson. On a sorti "Beneath the Tide" sur un album du même nom en 2000 (je me suis rendu compte il y a pas longtemps que certains de nos fans ont acheté ces vieux albums sur ebay !!) mais on n'a jamais été entièrement satisfaits de cette version studio. On en a beaucoup discuté de la possibilité de la réenregistrer mais on n'a jamais eu le temps ou la motivation de le faire jusqu'à présent. On a complètement réarrangé la chanson, on a ajouté des nouvelles parties, donc la version de notre 10ème anniversaire est certainement une version deluxe améliorée. On a toujours adoré cette chanson (on finit quasiment tous nos concerts avec celle-ci) et c'est génial d'avoir finalement une version dont on est fiers.


Magic Fire Music : "Lorelai" est aussi un titre que certains ont pu découvrir en avant première sur The Haiti Projekt. Pourquoi avoir choisi ce titre en particulier sur ce disque ? Comment as-tu été contacté par Brian Cobb ?
James : Si "Lorelai" a été enregistrée, c'est vraiment grâce au Haiti Projekt. Au mois de Janvier, Brian Cobb nous a demandé si on voulait bien contribuer au Haiti Projekt avec une chanson. J'ai trouvé ça puissant de fournir une chanson qui était introuvable ailleurs. J'avais écrit la ballade "Lorelai" il y a plusieurs années et elle devait faire partie d'un concept-album qui n'est finalement jamais sorti. Le thème et les sonorités des chansons semblaient vraiment coller parfaitement à ce projet (ou projekt) donc je me suis servi de cela comme excuse pour réorchestrer et réenregistrer cette chanson qui n'aurait malheureusement probablement jamais vu le jour autrement. On était vraiment satisfaits du résultat au final, et on a pensé qu'on pourrait peut-être coupler cette chanson à "Beneath the Tide" afin qu'elle sorte aussi sur notre propre CD, une fois que les ventes du Haiti Projekt se soient essoufflées. Magic Fire Music : Parlons maintenant des titres Live. Une chanson, un endroit. Pourquoi ce choix de lieux différents ?
James : Edensong a été vraiment chanceux de pouvoir jouer dans trois des plus grands festivals Nord Américains de Rock Progressif sur un an. Chaque festival a été une expérience formidable pour nous. On a voulu donner une image plutôt représentative de nous en tant que groupe de scène dans ces chansons live et aussi mettre l'accent sur certaines chansons de chacun de ces différents concerts. A vrai dire je me serais senti un peu mal à l'aise si j'avais dû sortir les chansons d'un seul et même concert, parce que certaines ne sonnaient pas comme on le voulait. Alors, au lieu de les réenregistrer ou de faire des arrangements en studio, on a choisi de sélectionner les performances dont on était plutôt fiers (mais bien sûr il y a toujours l'effet "live" qui fait que parfois le son n'est pas parfait, ou que la batterie n'est pas parfaitement en rythme, mais nous ne sommes pas Dream Theater... Du moins pour le moment :-p). Je trouvais par exemple qu'au Progday, notre performance sur la chanson "the Reunion" était vraiment dynamique et intense, donc c'était un choix évident. La version live de "Beneath the Tide" au 3RP a été une performance de changement de carrière pour le groupe, puisqu'elle marquait les retrouvailles de Echoes of Eden et la nouvelle collaboration avec Ben et Tony, donc une chanson importante qu'il fallait inclure également. Et malgré le fait que la qualité audio de "The Sixth Day" ne soit pas géniale (et j'ai honte d'avouer que j'ai merdé sur quelques mots du deuxième couplet), on aime beaucoup l'énergie et l'atmosphère qui se dégage de cette performance live au Québec, donc on a décidé de l'ajouter en tant que bonus.


Magic Fire Music : Est-ce que tu peux nous présenter les musiciens qui t'accompagnent durant les concerts ? Ils sont tous vraiment excellents !
James : Ces mecs sont géniaux ! Je suis tout content d'avoir l'opportunité de travailler avec un groupe de musiciens aussi fantastiques et de personnes aussi merveilleuses. Alors tout d'abord on a Stefan au synthé. Stefan a rejoint Edensong juste après la sortie de "The Fruit Fallen" et il est une des raisons pour laquelle Edensong existe toujours et est de se porte de mieux en mieux aujourd'hui. On a cherché et élaboré ensemble ce nouveau line-up qu'on a aujourd'hui et je suis très content que notre travail ait finalement porté ses fruits. Ensuite on a Barry à la flûte. Barry était un ami proche et il a joué avec Stefan dans un groupe auparavant. Mise à part le fait qu'il soit un joueur de flûte formidable, Barry est aussi un excellent compositeur et un fan de prog rock refoulé. Stefan a dû le ramener dans le groupe à coups de pieds et en criant, mais heureusement le fait de devoir jouer à 3RP l'a fait rester assez longtemps pour qu'il se rende compte qu'il aime ça ! Puis on a Tony à la batterie. Tony est un de mes meilleurs amis d'enfance et il jouait avec moi dans Echoes of Eden.On s'était juré de retravailler ensemble un jour, mais il est parti pour voyager dans le monde entier et ensuite pour enseigner l'anglais au Japon. Heureusement pour nous, à ce moment là la réunion était possible et voilà le résultat ! TD Towers est à la basse. C'est un bon bassiste mais je ne peux pas vraiment vous en dire plus sur lui. Et enfin on a Mike au violon ! Mike est un nouveau membre d'Edensong, mais tu ne le sais probablement pas. Il relève tous les défis et s'est lancé dans le processus de création avec le groupe dès qu'il est arrivé. Sur l'album il y a aussi Matthew Bauer, un percussionniste extraordinaire qui était le batteur principal d'Edensong pendant environ un an et il se joint toujours encore à nous en studio et parfois aussi sur scène. Et aussi le talentueux violoncelliste Carl Baron qui jouait avec nous en 2009 et qui a quitté le groupe pour poursuivre ses études de musique classique. Le guitariste Ben Wigler qui est un vieil ami à moi et qui apparaît en guest sur "Beneath the Tide". Et notre bassiste Mike Tee, aussi un musicien talentueux (aussi guitariste, chanteur, compositeur) mais on s'est rendu compte par la suite qu'il ne convient pas au groupe. Je pense que c'est tout !


Magic Fire Music : Sur cette partie Live on peut déjà entendre "Beneath The Tide". Est-ce important de 'tester' les nouveaux morceaux avant de les enregistrer en studio ?
James : Non ce n'est pas essentiel pour nous de tester les chansons en live avant de les enregistrer. La plupart des chansons de "The Fruit Fallen" n'avait jamais été joué en live avant d'être enregistré. C'est peut-être aussi une des raisons pour laquelle jouer cet album en live reste un réel challenge pour nous ! Avec le nouvel album qu'on est en train d'écrire, je pense que dans certains cas on jouera les chansons en live avant de les enregistrer. Je pense que ça dépend du nombre de concerts qu'on fera pendant la période d'enregistrement. C'est difficile de trouver le temps de tout faire en même temps ! Puisque "Beneath the Tide" est une vieille chanson pour nous, elle fera toujours partie de notre set live. On a choisi d'inclure cette performance particulière parce que c'était important pour nous puisqu'elle a amené Ben et Tony à renouveler leur engagement avec Edensong.


Magic Fire Music : Quelle est la notoriété du groupe aux USA ?
James : Malheureusement on n'est pas super connus aux USA. On y travaille, mais amener un groupe à être reconnu de partout c'est une bataille difficile, surtout dans le milieu de la musique qui sort du style traditionnel que tout le monde écoute. C'est autant une question de chance que de travail. Pour ce qui est de la chance, je ne peux rien contrôler, mais une chose est certaine c'est que je me bouge le cul pour que les choses se fassent. Maintenant que notre line-up pour les concerts est renforcé, on va essayer de prévoir un maximum de concerts de tous types. J'espère que ça va aider à faire monter en notoriété la musique d'Edensong et à la faire connaître à un plus large public, au delà des fans du milieu rock progressif.


Magic Fire Music : Edensong a joué à Québec. On peut d'ailleurs entendre The Six Day en live dans la ville francophone. Pourquoi être allé jouer dans cette ville ?
James : On était tout contents qu'on nous demande d'aller jouer à Québec. C'était notre premier concert en dehors des Etats-Unis ! J'ai rencontré Michel, l'organisateur de la convention Terra Incognita, lorsqu'on était en train de promouvoir notre musique sur le festival FMPM à Montreal avec Edensong (malheureusement c'était la dernière année que ce super festival avait lieu). Avec Michel on a beaucoup parlé du fait de faire jouer Edensong dans son festival à Québec et quelques semaines plus tard j'ai reçu un email de sa part. On a tous pris beaucoup de plaisir à jouer là bas et c'était probablement là bas qu'on a eu l'accueil le plus chaleureux qu'on n'ait jamais reçu.


Magic Fire Music : Tu es venu faire un tour en France et en Europe au mois de Juin je crois. Quel était le but de cette visite ?
James : Hé bien on était uniquement en France lors de ce voyage. Je voyageais avec ma copine (qui est maintenant ma fiancée !) Sarah, donc ça n'avait absolument rien à voir avec Edensong. Je suis un peu un obsédé du travail, donc c'était les seules vacances que j'ai pris depuis des années. A part quelques travaux de modification de certaines chansons de l'album Echoes of Edensong, j'ai passé le reste du séjour sans travailler. On a passé de bons moments, j'ai bien envie d'y retourner !


Magic Fire Music : Penses-tu pouvoir jouer sur le vieux continent et plus particulièrement en France ?
James : Ca dépend vraiment de vous, des gens comme toi et tes lecteurs. Tu connais des gens qui bossent sur des festivals français ou européens de rock progressif ? Si on pouvait être invités, on sauterait sur l'occasion pour venir jouer. On a juste besoin de cette invitation...


Magic Fire Music : Tu as pensé quoi de notre pays ?
James : J'ai adoré, j'aimerais bien y retourner ! On a d'abord été à Paris pour quelques jours, après on a roulé jusqu'en Bourgogne et dans le Massif Central, c'était très rustique et très beau, et enfin on est allés en Dordogne dans le Sud-Ouest de la France avant de retourner sur Versailles et puis Paris pour reprendre l'avion pour rentrer chez nous. Avec Sarah on adore se balader et à faire de la randonnée, donc on a préféré rester la plupart du temps dans des endroits ruraux et extérieurs pour nos vacances. Le pays est merveilleux et presque tous les gens qu'on a rencontré en chemin étaient sympathiques et nous ont aidé, nous pauvres touristes perdus avec de faibles notions de la langue française !


Magic Fire Music : Le nouvel album est-il bien avancé ?
James : On est en plein dans le processus d'écriture pour l'instant. Ca avance un peu plus doucement que ce qu'on avait prévu, surtout parce qu'on a tous beaucoup d'activités : répèt', concerts, travail sur un clip vidéo, promouvoir Edensong, sans compter nos vies personnelles et professionnelles à côté (bah oui il faut bien qu'on se nourrisse aussi d'une manière ou d'une autre !). Malgré le fait que ça avance doucement, je suis très content des nouvelles chansons, ça sonne bien et c'est une expérience formidable de bosser en collaboration avec le reste du groupe sur la composition. On a eu l'occasion de faire découvrir une nouvelle chanson il y a quelques mois à NY et une autre à Boston il y a quelques semaines.


Magic Fire Music : De quoi va parler ce disque ? Est-ce que créer un concept album t'intéresse ?
James : Je ne veux pas entrer trop dans les détails parce que ces choses là sont toujours susceptibles de changer. Ca sera un concept-album comportant un long cycle de chansons qui vont ensemble. Il pourra contenir également quelques autres chansons qui ne rentrent pas dans ce cycle. La plupart des chansons évoluent autour du concept du "temps". Pour l'instant on n'a aucune idée de date de sortie : on n'a même pas encore commencé officiellement à enregistrer pour le moment, mais crois moi je suis très impatient de partager cette musique avec les gens. Je suis comme un fou !

Magic Fire Music : Nous allons essayer de mieux te connaître, avec quelques questions.
Qu'est-ce qui t'énerve dans la vie de tous les jours ?
James : Probablement mon ordinateur du studio quand il plante ! Malheureusement pour moi ça arrive plutôt souvent !

Magic Fire Music : Qu'est-ce qui te fais rire ?
James : J'ai des collègues de groupe plutôt marrants...

Magic Fire Music : Raconte-nous une histoire drôle typiquement américaine...
James : Est-ce que tu as lu la biographie de TD Towers sur le site d'Edensong ? C'est pas typiquement américain, mais c'est très drôle (enfin plutôt étrange que drôle à vrai dire !)


Magic Fire Music : Quels groupes musicaux ont marqué ton esprit de par leur originalité ou tout simplement leur talent cette année ?
James : On a eu l'occasion de jouer en concert avec quelques très bons groupes durant ces deux dernières années. Parmi ceux-ci je citerais Phideaux, IZZ, Half Past Four, Discipline, Galahad 3RDegree etc. Ceux là je les aime tous beaucoup ! Il y a énormément d'autres groupes de la scène prog que j'ai beaucoup apprécié aussi, comme par exemple Shadow Circus, Riverside, Beardfish etc. Il y a beaucoup de musique géniale qui existe. J'aimerais avoir plus le temps d'en écouter !

Magic Fire Music : Que fais-tu le soir avant de te coucher ?
James : J'aimerais bien pouvoir dire "c'est personnel !" mais en réalité la plupart du temps je ne fais qu'éteindre mon ordinateur de studio, me brosser les dents et me mettre au lit. Je suis un obsédé du travail.

Magic Fire Music : Et le matin en te levant, le premier truc que tu fais ?
James : Allumer mon ordinateur et regarder mes mails en général.

Magic Fire Music : Voilà, on va s'arrêter là pour cette deuxième interview. Merci beaucoup de nous avoir consacré un peu de ton temps.

Magic Fire Music : Hello James, I'm glad to do this second interview with you for Magic Fire Music. The first one was in December 2008, that's quite a long time ago now. Can you tell us what happened for you and the band since 2008?
James : Thanks Cedric, I'm glad as well! A lot has happened since the release of "The Fruit Fallen." Most notably, Edensong has become a real live band. After many years of struggling to keep a lineup together, I have finally found the right musicians for Edensong. Much of our effort over the past couple years has been spent working on our live set and getting used to working together. Being asked to play the Three Rivers Progressive Rock Festival (3RP) really set everything in motion. From the time Edensong was booked at the festival, I had exactly a year to assemble a full lineup and put together a tight live set (it had been a couple years since this material had been played live, and that was by a completely different lineup!). We hit a few roadblocks along the way finding the right people, but each lineup change made the band stronger and more cohesive. Right now, we have the band firing on all cylinders: we have an active live schedule for the fall, we're working collaboratively on composing and recording a brand new album, and we're all actively working on promoting the band to a wider audience. It's a lot of work, but we're all happy to be doing it!


Magic Fire Music : Today we are going to talk more about "Echoes of Edensong". Why did you choose to release this album full of bonus tracks, never released before, recorded again or live songs?
James : 3RP brought about the reunion between me and my former bandmates from my high school band Echoes of Eden. They joined Edensong onstage for our final song "Beneath the Tide." This is a song we wrote together when we were 14 and we always dreamed of the opportunity to bring it to a real audience! 3RP was a great opportunity to put this together. After the performance, we talked about the possibility of re-recording some of the original material from our album "Beneath the Tide" with Edensong and release it as an EP. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your opinion), "Beneath the Tide" is the only song from the early days that we could convince the rest of the band to record. Despite not recording a full EP of the Echoes of Eden material, as I had initially anticipated, it planted the seeds for the EP "Echoes of Edensong." The decision to release an EP at the time we did was a bit of a business move: We knew that a full length album would probably take us a couple years to produce and we wanted to keep our name out there (especially since the live band was becoming more active than ever before) and give our fans something new to listen to in the meantime. There was a story and a reason behind each of the tracks we chose to include and I can talk about that a little later.


Magic Fire Music : Why did you choose particularly to record again "To See But Not Believe"? Weren't you satisfied of the first result?
James : Well, to be technical, we never re-recorded "To See But Not Believe." We re-mastered it. It's the same original recording, but I think it sounds better in this context. "To See But Not Believe" was never officially released. It was on an early "Excerpts from the Fruit Fallen" CD that we made for promotional purposes, but it was never sold. You've been familiar with Edensong for a long time and have heard this song on the original promo CD, but most of our fans started listening after "The Fruit Fallen" was released. "To See But Not Believe" also appeared as a hidden track on early pressings of The Fruit Fallen, but I never felt that it fit particularly well with the rest of that album. A lot of people tend to like this song and complained that it didn't have its own track index on "The Fruit Fallen," so we figured it would be worth including on "The Echoes of Edensong" collection.


Magic Fire Music : Is "Beneath the Tide" a new composition? What are the lyrics about?
James : "Beneath the Tide" is actually one of the first songs I ever wrote. I wrote this with my childhood best friends (and bandmates) Tony Waldman, who joined Edensong in 2009, and Ben Wigler, who has been a frequent Edensong collaborator over the years. We were 14 year olds channeling our progressive idols: Rush, Dream Theater, Jethro Tull etc. "Beneath the Tide" tells the story of a man who is tired and unsatisfied with his life. He spends his days contemplating his own life and watching a world across the water. He wants to be a part of this world and thinks he will find happiness there so he decides to swim across the water to get there. In the process, he drowns (of course!), but at the end of the song it is revealed that he is re-born as a child on the other side. It's a pretty grandiose tale, but it did come from the mind of a prog-obsessed 14 year old. I happen to think the lyrics fit the song pretty well. We released "Beneath the Tide" on an album of the same name in early 2000 (I recently found out some of our fans have been finding/buying these old CDs on ebay!!), but we were never really pleased with the studio version. We had long discussed the possibility of re-recording the track, but never had the time or the motivation to do so fully until recently. We've completely re-arranged the song, adding a ton of new parts, so the 10 year anniversary version is certainly an improved deluxe edition! We've always loved this song (we end almost every show with it!) and it's great to finally have a recorded version that we're really proud of!


Magic Fire Music : Some people have discovered on preview the song "Lorelai" on the Haiti Projekt. Why did you choose to put this song and not another on this album? How did Brian Cobb get in touch with you?
James : The reason that "Lorelai" has been recorded at all is really thanks to the Haiti Projekt. Back in January, we were asked by Brian Cobb to contribute a track to the Haiti Projekt. I felt strongly that we provide a song that couldn't be found elsewhere. I wrote the ballad "Lorelai" many years ago as part of concept album, which I've come to realize will probably never be made. The theme and tone of the song really seemed to fit the project (or projekt) so I took this as an excuse to re-orchestrate and record this song, which, unfortunately, would probably otherwise have never have been recorded. Magic Fire Music : What can you tell us about live songs of the album? A different place for each song. Why this choice of different places?
James : Edensong was very fortunate that we had the opportunity to play three major North American progressive rock festivals within a year. Each festival was an amazing experience. We wanted the live tracks on the album to be a pretty accurate representation of ourselves as a live band and wanted to highlight different songs from different shows. The truth is that I would have felt pretty uncomfortable releasing any of the single full shows, as some of the songs didn't sound the way we wanted them to. So, rather than have to re-record anything or do massive edits in the studio, we chose select performances that we were pretty pleased with (of course there are still the "live" moments of sour tuning or missed drum hits in the songs that we chose, but we're not Dream Theater…yet :-p ). I felt that "the Reunion" from Progday was a really dynamic and tight performance of that song, so that made it a pretty obvious choice. The live version of Beneath the Tide from 3RP was a career changing performance for the band, as it marked the Echoes of Eden reunion and the renewed collaboration with Ben and Tony, so it seemed like an important track to include. While the audio quality of "The Sixth Day" is not wonderful (and I'm embarrassed to say that I screwed up a couple words in the second verse), we really loved the energy and vibe of this Quebec performance, so we decided to include it as a bonus.


Magic Fire Music : Can you make a short description of the musicians who are with you on stage? They are all very good musicians!
James : These guys are great! I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to work with a band of such fantastic musicians and wonderful people. First up is Stefan on keyboards. Stefan joined Edensong right after the release of "The Fruit Fallen" and is really a lot of the reason Edensong still exists and is going so strong these days. We started this current lineup together, and I'm really happy that all of our hard work has finally started to pay off. Next is Barry on flute. Barry was a close friend and former bandmate of Stefan. Aside from being a great flute player, Barry is an excellent composer and progressive rock fan in denial. Stefan had to drag him kicking and screaming into the band, but luckily the lures of playing 3RP kept him on board long enough to discover that he actually likes it! Next is Tony on drums. Tony is one of my childhood best friends and played with me in Echoes of Eden. We vowed to work together again one day but he has been off traveling the world and teaching English in Japan. Luckily, the time was right for a reunion and here he is! TD Towers is on bass. He's a great player but I can't say very much about him. Finally, Cello Mike! Mike is the newest member of Edensong, but you wouldn't know it. He takes on every challenge and jumped right into the creative process with us upon joining the group. Also on the CD are Matthew Bauer, percussionist extraordinaire, who was Edensong's principal drummer for about a year and still joins us in the studio and occasionally on stage, the talented Carl Baron, our cellist in 2009 who left the band to pursue his classical studies, guitarist and old friend Ben Wigler, who appears as a guest on Beneath the Tide, and our then bassist Mike Tee, another very talented musician (guitarist/singer/songwriter as well) who we later realized was not the right guy for the band. I think that's everyone!


Magic Fire Music : We could listen to the live version of the song "Beneath the Tide" on this album. Is it important for you to test a new song live before recording it in a studio?
James : It's not essential for us to test a song live before recording it. Much of the material on the Fruit Fallen was never played live before being recorded. This may be a reason why this material is still the most challenging for us to play! With the new album we're writing, I suspect that we'll be premiering these songs live before recording them in some cases. I guess this all depends on how many gigs we get during the recording process. It's hard to find the time to do both at the same time! Since "Beneath the Tide" is such an old song for us, we've always had this as part of our live set. We chose to include this particular performance because it was such an important one for us as it brought about Ben and Tony's renewed involvement with Edensong.


Magic Fire Music : Is the band well-known in the USA?
James : Unfortunately, no! We're working on it, but getting a band widely recognized is an uphill battle, especially for music so far outside of mainstream tastes. It's both a matter of luck and hard work. I can't control the luck part, but I'm certainly going to work my ass off to make things happen. Now that we have a strong gigging lineup, we'll be trying to set up a lot of shows in different types of venues. I hope this will help to bring the music of Edensong to a wider audience, beyond the purely progressive rock subculture.


Magic Fire Music : Edensong had a gig in Québec. The live song "The Six Day" was recorded in this French-speaking state. Why did you go to this city for a concert?
James : We were thrilled to be asked to play in Quebec. This was our first show outside of the US! I had met Michel, the promoter for the Terra Incognita Convention, while Edensong was promoting our music at the FMPM festival in Montreal (unfortunately, it was the final year of that great festival). Michel and I spoke about the prospect of bringing Edensong to his fest in Quebec city and I received an e-mail from him a few weeks later. We all had a ton of fun at the show, and it has probably been the warmest welcome we've ever received!


Magic Fire Music : I've heard you came in France and went around Europe in June this year. What was the aim of that visit?
James : Well, we were only in France for this trip. I was traveling with my girlfriend (now fiance!) Sarah, so it was completely unrelated to Edensong. I'm a bit obsessive about work, so it was the most vacation I have had in years. Aside from some editing work for the "Echoes of Edensong" album, I went the whole trip without working. It was a wonderful time. I want to go back!


Magic Fire Music : Do you think you could come and play in Europe and particularly in France in the near future?
James : That's really up to people like you and your readers. Do you know anyone involved with any of the French/European progressive rock festivals? We would jump at the invitation to play. We just need that invitation…


Magic Fire Music : What do you think about our country? Did you enjoy visiting France?
James : Yes! I want to come back. We travelled first to Paris for a few days, then we drove through Burgundy down to the Massif Central area, which was rustic and beautiful, and then finally to Dordogne region in the Southwest of France before returning to Versailles and eventually Paris to fly back home. Sarah and I both enjoy walking and hiking, so we tried to keep most of our trip in the more rural, outdoorsy areas. The country was beautiful and almost everyone we met was very friendly and helpful to clueless tourists like us with terrible French skills!


Magic Fire Music : What can you tell us about the new album? Will it be finished soon?
James : We're deep in the process of writing right now. It's been going a little more slowly than we had hoped, mainly because we're all doing so many other things: rehearsing and performing, working on a music video, and promoting Edensong, not to mention all of our regular lives, personal and professional (we need to make a living somehow!). Despite the slow progress, I'm really thrilled with all of the new stuff. It's sounding great, and it's been a wonderful experience working collaboratively with the rest of the band on composition. We had a chance to premier a new song a couple months ago in NY and another one in Boston a few weeks ago.

Magic Fire Music : What is this album about? Are you interested in creating a concept album?
James : I don't want to go into too many details because these things can always change. It will be a concept album with one long song cycle that all flows together, and possibly assorted other songs that don't fit in the main cyclic. Most of the songs revolve around the very broad concept of "time." We don't have any sense of a release date: we haven't even started official recording yet, but believe me, I can't wait to share this music with the world. I'm psyched!

Magic Fire Music : We will now try to know you better through a few questions about yourself.
What makes you angry the most in everyday life?
James : Probably when my studio computer crashes. Unfortunately for me, this happens pretty often!

Magic Fire Music : What makes you laugh?
James : I have some pretty funny bandmates…

Can you tell us a typical American funny story?
James : Have you read the bio for TD Towers on the Edensong website? It's not typical, but it's certainly pretty funny (well…probably more strange than funny!)

What were your favorite bands this year? Which ones seemed original or talented to you?
James : We've had the opportunity to play shows with some great bands over the past couple years: Among these, Phideaux, IZZ, Half Past Four, Discipline, Galahad 3RDegree etc., all of whom I really like! There are plenty of other groups in the prog scene that I've been enjoying as well: Shadow Circus, Riverside, Beardfish etc. There's a lot of great music out there. I wish I had more time to listen to it!

Magic Fire Music : What are you doing at night before going to sleep?
James : I wish I could say "that's getting personal," but really, most of the time it's just turning off my studio computer, brushing my teeth and going to bed. I'm a workaholic.

Magic Fire Music :
And what is the first thing you do in the morning?
James : Turning on my computer and checking e-mail, generally.
