Magic Fire Music : Hi ! And thank you for this interview.
Well first of all your latest album "Unrestricted" has just been released through AFM records.
This album is very different from "Become Death". It's a new direction for Symphorce ?
Cédric : Yeah, you could say so, because after 6 albums it was time for us to take another step although it has always been like SYMPHORCE never released two records that sounded exactly like the previous one. It’s just that we wanted to focus on our strength to write simple songs that are catchy and leave enough space to play with sounds and emotions. But that does not mean that it was easier to write the album although the songs sound a lot simpler structured that what we have written so far.
Magic Fire Music : How has the band's sound progressed from the last album ?
Cédric : I think after doing a couple of tours and play live a lot we thought that the simpler songslike “Inside the Cast” and “In the Hopes of a dream” from Become Death were just more fun to play live and that people easier knew what we were all about. So we took everything together and held on to the direction and a the emotions the way “Unrestricted” sounds like now.
Magic Fire Music : How does your songwriting process work ? Is it different from the last process work ?
Cédric : Not really, it has always been like that me, Markus and Dennis write all the music and then hand it out to each other to arrange it with everyone in the band. And then Andy comes along with his
vocal lines and lyrics, and that’s basically it. The sole exception for “Unrestricted” if comparing it to other records was the time in between releases. We really needed and wanted to take as much time as it takes to make sure that we have what we want to have ..
Magic Fire Music : A new Label for the band, it's a new begining for you ?
Cédric : Yeah, of course a new label partner, a new record with some new aspects in our music, you could say that we reloaded our batteries and are back with a lotta horsepower in our ass, haha.
Magic Fire Music : What is this album talking about?
Cédric : It’s about kicking your French asses out there, hahaha.
Magic Fire Music : What is the meaning of Title "Unrestricted" ?
Cédric : It shows that we are back with full power once again. We had a longer break and feel really fresh and unrestricted these days, because we were able to regain our strength and power to make sure that we release a killer album for all the fans that support us during the last 11 years.
Magic Fire Music : Are you happier in the studio or on stage?
Cédric : I’m happy with both sides. Being in a studio recording an album is almost like putting together a puzzle as a kid, and the more pieces you stick together the cooler the picture of art looks like.
But playing live is so much fun too, cause you have the energy, the sweat, the fans, …Both is really great for me.
Magic Fire Music : How was the recording of this album?
Cédric : It’s been kinda busy because in the end everything had to be laid down quite fast to make sure we keep our time schedule, but I think when you had all the time in the world to record an album then it’s just fine to record it as fast as possible, cause it makes it sounding kinda fresh. I would not like to spend 2 years in a studio and record every damn part over and over and over again.
Magic Fire Music : Will Symphorce come to France this time for a concert?
Cédric : We really hope that! It’s been a long time since we last played there for you people. At the moment we are putting some plans together for a tour that will hopefully include France as well. We surely can’t wait to get back, ….”c’est sure!!!!”
Magic Fire Music : What CDs are currently in your CD player/iPod?
Cédric : Hmmm, let me think ….. The new James laBrie kicks ass, …then I have some Richie Sambora in my car, and Evergrey in my kitchen, …. J
